The Revolution Will Be Televised

Banksy storyboarded and directed a new opening sequence for the Simpsons on Sunday night. In classic Bansky fashion, he paints a dark, and creepy vision of the world with a behind the scenes look at the process of animation, marketing, and promotion by the behemoth 20th Century Fox.

Wooster Collective notes that this is probably “one of the most closely guarded secrets in TV history”. And the New York Times has an interview with Al Jean, an executive producer of the Simpsons, discussing how they tracked down Banksy and how Fox executive’s reacted to the opening.

Banksy has done other “Simpsons” street art including this one in New Orleans.

And taking it even one step further: London art collective, JBOY have created this hilarious “Simpsons” based parody of Banksy’s “Haring Dog”.

Extended Desktop Wallpapers

These cool images by Mike Ruiz take the familiar Mac and Windows OS desktop wallpapers and extend them beyond their original frames.

A series of images with white area added to the sides and then put through Content-Aware Fill (a Photoshop CS5 tool that automatically generates content based on the existing content of the image and fills in the surrounding blank space). The resulting image is an extended view as interpreted by the software.

Kaleidoscopic Microscopic Photos Of Booze

These kaleidoscopic images are micrographs of alcoholic beverages collected by Florida State University. The images are made by crystallizing the cocktail or beer or wine on a lab slide, then passing polarized light through the crystal and magnifying it over 1000 times. As the light refracts through the beverage crystals, the resulting photos have naturally magnificent colors and composition.

Friends, Lovers, And Family

After the low-brow posts below I guess I’ll put up something a little more high-brow. Lapham’s Quarterly has been kickin’ it hard online lately. In fact, nearly half of their latest issue is available free online. Good stuff in here folks, take some time to have a good look. I have been particularly entertained by the charts and graphs. The diagram below is one of my favorites from the tons of fun literary diagrams (and plain ol’ smart thinking) you’ll find inside.
