Museum Of Endangered Sounds

I love the idea of saving sounds from extinction. Marybeth Ledesma, Phil Hadad and Greg Elwood (under the guise of Brendan Chilcutt) have created and curated the online Museum Of Endangered Sounds. It’s an audio archive of yesteryear’s gadgets and electronics. Without the museum the sounds of analog cameras, dot matrix printers, dial-up modems, Speak & Spells, and floppy disks would have died a silent death. But now I have them archived for my own nostalgic musing. We would have failed as a generation if we didn’t try to preserve and then force our past on the youth of today. Long live Museum Of Endangered Sounds.

Audioscrobbling Turns 10

Today audioscrobbling turns ten years old. Wired has a nice interview with Richard Jones, audiscrobbling’s inventor, that discusses his inspiration, success and future plans.

I started scrobbling songs in 2006 shortly after the merge with Last.fm. As of today I have scrobbled 22,861 songs. You can see annual overviews (complete with visualizations and top 10 lists) of my scrobbles for 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, and 2006.

Barack Goes Down?

In fairness, I suppose it is only appropriate that I also show the Facebook changes to the recent election winner and not just the loser.

Here’s a real-time look at the total number of likes on Barack Obama’s on Facebook. The number in parentheses at the end of each line is the difference since you first loaded the page (updated every 10 seconds). It tells quite a different story.

Mitt Goes Down

It appears that since Mitt Romney’s was defeated in his bid for presidency his Facebook users no longer like him and are leaving in droves. According to Mashable, Mitt is losing an average of 847 Facebook friends per hour.

Here’s a real-time look at the total number of likes on Mitt Romney’s on Facebook. The number in parentheses at the end of each line is the difference since you first loaded the page (updated every 10 seconds). Mmm, sweet tasty schadenfreude!

What’s Not To Like?

I definitely like this:

I Like What I See is a Chrome extension to automatically click all “Like” links on Facebook. When you visit Facebook, click the thumbs up in the extension bar and start scrolling and liking. Liking and scrolling. Every instance of the word “Like” will be clicked. Don’t worry, Facebook is a fun place full of all of the stuff you like.

I liked what I saw when I saw Steven Klise’s “I Like what I See” Chrome extension. You might like it to, so I packaged it up for your easy consumption.

  1. First click here to download the extension.
  2. Open your Chrome Extension Manager (by typing chrome://extensions into your address bar)
  3. Drag the file you downloaded in step one onto your extension page.
  4. Click Add

Brooke Shields And Punk Rock

This photo of H.R., lead singer of Bad Brains, smoking weed with a supposed Brooke Shields has been circling the internet like crazy the last couple of days.

Although it would be incredible if this really happened, I’m sorry to say I’m 99.9% sure that isn’t really Brooke Shields. Which is too bad because it would have been the best picture ever if it was. However, don’t be too let down, Brooke actually has some strong punk rock roots. First off, Brooke did have an actual photo shoot with punk originator Stiv Bators, lead singer of the Dead Boys.

The above interview from Efrom Allen’s Underground TV was taken during the photo shoot with Stiv Bators. It aired on Manhattan Cable’s public access channel in the 1970s. The 12-year-old Brooke Shields actually gets a little flirty with the American punk rock innovator.

Furthering her punk rock roots, Shields opens up Agent Orange’s song ‘Bloodstain’ for the ‘Rondey On The ROQ Volume 1’ compilation. The album also includes rougher versions songs from the Circle Jerks, U.X.A., Black Flag, and Circle Jerks. Have a listen: Agent Orange – Bloodstains

c”,)

Has anybody else seen this emoticon showing up around the internet? If you can’t tell what’s happening, the c is the nose, the ” is the eyes, the , is the mouth and the ) is the back of the head c”,) Other variations include:
c°.)
c¨.)
c”_)
and combinations thereof. I find this fascinating because they are a full side view, a third aspect for smileys, different from the US/European sideways .:-) style and the face-on Japanese style (^_^). The folks over at metafilter seem to think they are possibly Nordic or Latin in origin. Regardless, it’s a reminder of the constant evolving world of the emoticon.
