Sister Golden Hair Suprise

The Chutes At Mary Jane
Last Sunday probably wasn’t the last day of the ski season for me. Arapahoe Basin will most likey be open long into the spring (I once skied A-Basin on the 4th of July) and I’m sure I’ll get one last day in there. But Sunday was was the last day to ski for free on our passes. Mary Jane was much more crowded than we expected. The last two weekends have been practically empty but it seems, this time around, everyone had the same idea as us and it ended up being a lot of fun.

The entire place was a giant party/cookout/ski fest. There were at least three bands in the parking lot – a punk band that drew all the young snowboarders, an “old persons band” that rocked out the classics like America’s Sister Golden Hair (One of my many favorite songs from the 70’s), and an acoustic duo that was barely audible above all the party goers.

The entire day was a blast and the whole mountain was going off. We had bluebird skies and weather in the 60’s. We had hot dogs, beer, and a grill. We had enough snow that the chutes were open (see the photo above) and the skiing was nice and heavy and mash-potato-ey at the bottom. Lots of people were dressed up in costumes or bikinis. It was probably one of the more fun days in what was one of the better ski seasons of my life.

Raclette

The blizzard of oh-six has been more fun for me than hassle. We were finally able to get the cars dug out yesterday after three long days of being stuck and serious shoveling by both G and myself. The storm allowed me a few snow days from work that were rather lazily spent. On Wednesday night a few nearby friends braved the accumulating drifts and headed over to our house for Raclette. I had never had Raclette before and it’s wonderful, perfect for a cold snowy evening stuck indoors. How can you go wrong with cheese, sausage, potatoes, and onion? Yummmmm.

Colorado Snow

The Eye on Colorado page contains links to all Colorado Ski Resort Webcams, I70 & CDOT Webcams, CDOT Mountain Pass Status, Weather Reports, and the CAIC Avalanche Danger Rose. The links and information should give the user a complete picture of the current dangers and status of Colorado’s Mountain terrain including roads resort and back country. I’ll be checking this site often.

Noctilucent Clouds

Look west 30 to 60 minutes after sunset when the Sun has dipped 6 to 16 degrees below the horizon. If you see luminous blue-white tendrils spreading across the sky, you’ve probably spotted a noctilucent cloud. Although noctilucent clouds appear most often at high latitudes–e.g. places like Scandinavia and Canada–they have been sighted as far south as Colorado, Utah and Virginia.

Feeding Your Family On $45 Per Week

Weather because of an emergency or plain old penny pinching, sometimes it’s necessary to scrimp and save. Here is a menu for feeding your family on $45 per week. Forty-five dollars will seem outrageously abundant to some, while it will seem miniscule to others. It is the smallest amount they were able to come up with that will provide enough supplies to an empty kitchen to feed an entire family for a week. The servings are ample and a few adjustments allow you to increase the quantities from 4 servings to 6. Newly added nutritional information makes it clear that except for sodium, these recipes are “nutritious” and “healthy”.

Spin Cycle

I work downtown, on the 35th floor of a taller building. We just got an alarm to move away from exterior windows and toward the interior of the building due to tornadoes. I’ve been working here for seven years and have never heard such a warning. Crazy weather. Good thing I’m sitting here protected by my high walled cube.
